Transgender Health and Medicine

While bathroom laws have diverted media attention, transgender patients continue to turn to health care for respect and understanding about their gender identities. Discrimination, including in clinical settings, continues to exacerbate disparities in health status, access to health care, and quality of care for members of transgender communities. This month the AMA Journal of Ethics considers the nature and scope of medicine’s obligations to respond to these ethically and clinically troubling trends: practice of gender-affirming care by all clinical and office staff is key for improving critical health outcomes.
